The access track to the Blue Pool car park was reinstated just before Christmas so I took a drive up there for my usual Christmas Day "fish". As you'd expect after a logging operation things have changed...a lot!! I know it was a grey, dreary old morning which probably made things look a lot worse, but It was a pretty depressing sight. On a positive note the track has been mostly regraded and although its a bit slippery in places at least you don't need a tank to get down there anymore. Once you get near the river things improve and unless you glance behind you it looks just the same. I fished ...

Merry Christmas.

The lead up to Christmas is usually fairly quiet, however this year every man and his dog seem to be making a bee-line for the river. With temperatures often in the high twenties I don't blame them ... and its not only anglers. Now that the holidays are upon us the rafting companies are busy and there are also plenty of kayakers enjoying the river. The kids make their own fun and its inner tube time on some of the town stretches. Some nice fish around this week and as the weather settled down and the mercury began to climb, right on cue the first of the cicadas emerged. The same thing happened last year during the first couple of weeks of December. But back then that early show fizzled out when things unexpectedly cooled down again. There aren't huge numbers of them around yet. But by mid morning most days now, you can hear the sound of summer along the river as the males chirp away to attract a mate. If the settled spell continues, the emergence and noise levels will build over the coming weeks... probably peaking in ...

Bio-security Alert.

Mike Fransham sent me this very concerning report earlier. "Not sure if you guys are aware of this but we need to be...." Cheers Mike Bio-security alert in the North Canterbury Fish and Game Region Due to a worrying bio-security concern in our region, the focus of this week's fishing report will on informing all anglers about what is happening. It is certainly with regret that I am having to report a bio-security alert in our region, rather than talking about fishing prospects for this weekend. The reality is at the moment, there is nothing more important. While we are hoping for the best, we ...

Fishing improves again ...

The fishing on the Tongariro has steadily improved with each passing day this week. And as we head into summer some none to shabby looking fish have turned up. Although the rash of thunderstorms produced the odd heavy downpour it didn't affect flows that much. But the threat of heavy rain seems to have got some fish moving. Experienced American angler Paul Prentiss caught fish from town through to the upper river. And a nice mix of well mended kelts with the odd better fish amongst them made his short visit to New Zealand one to remember. Stretches of the town and middle river have fished well ...
