More rafters than anglers ... Thu 29th November, 2018
The wet weather they'd forecast all week turned out to be nothing more than a few heavy showers and the flows never got above thirty cumecs. It did however put a slight milky tinge into the river ... although it's still very much a case of summer tactics for the best results. Nowhere near as many anglers on the Tongariro this week. In fact I've seen more rafters than fishermen when I've been upriver. At this time of year the rafting companies are busy with end of term school trips. And its not unusual to have six or seven rafts drift past packed with excited kids enjoying a day out on the wate ... |

The good news and the bad news. Sun 25th November, 2018
I suppose the good news is that since the last report we've had some rain. The bad news is so far it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference to the river. Its forecast to get heavier this afternoon with thunder in places. But then its back to showers again for the rest of this week with more rain on the cards for next weekend. In other words unless it actually buckets down today and tomorrow the river will remain low and clear. But these dreary, damp days are nearly always the catalyst for some pretty good hatches along the river. And for Mayfly in particular these are ideal conditions. On ... |

A little tougher ... Tue 20th November, 2018
There are still some good fish scattered throughout the river but its been a little tougher so far this week. Noticeably more anglers on the Tongariro since the last report and I've met fly fishermen from the UK, Bulgaria, USA and of course Australia. I've fished Judges twice since I last posted but its been getting a lot more attention the past six or seven days and it isn't quite as easy there now. I blame these buggers writing blogs.🤫 But up until the weekend it was still firing. The place was empty when I arrived on Friday but I was soon joined by an angler downstream and a Judges regul ... |

A fun week on the Tongariro. Sun 11th November, 2018
We've had some fantastic fishing the last six months, and the Tongariro has been on sparkling form again this week. I've fished from the Braids up to Big Bend and had a great time. I'm not going to pretend that the fish I've been catching have all been magnificent "five pounders"... of course they haven't .. its November! But with most of them turning out to be well mended fish keen to feed up in order to regain even more condition I've got to give them a ten out of ten for sheer fun. Add to that mainly fine weather and only a handful of other anglers around {when I've been fishing} and its ea ... |

Nothing has changed. Fri 9th November, 2018
Nothing much has changed on the Tongariro since the last report. Plenty of recovering rainbows around with a few fresh run fish amongst them. And at this time of year less anglers chasing them. When I pulled into Red Hut car park yesterday on a perfect, misty, damp morning there was only one other car parked up. We'd had some heavy overnight drizzle with more forecast but as I crossed the bridge to head up the TRB it was obvious it had made very little difference to the flows. But it had been enough to make the trudge up to the Fan a "refreshing" experience as I picked my way through the satur ... |

Up until the weekend. Mon 5th November, 2018
The rain arrived on cue but it didn't affect flows much and the river only rose a few cumecs. I didn't fish over the weekend but had a great few days on the river leading up to it ...including a couple of days with some fishing mates, Sean and his brother-in-law Luke. You may have seen them on the reports in the past because whenever they come down to Turangi they always seem to catch the river in a good mood and it was the same this time. During the two days they landed over thirty fish between them and couldn't put a foot wrong, particularly when they fished my favourite town pool. Both of ... |
