Tongariro still firing.

The Tongariro continues to fire with plenty of recovering fish and more late Spring runs keeping anglers busy. Over the weekend just about every fish I hooked seemed to be a male trout sporting full spawning colors but today it was the turn of the ladies as more fresh runs shot through the town pools. We know the overall size and condition is down on last year but at the moment there are some nice fish moving through the town and middle stretches. Plenty of insect activity throughout the river and despite anglers having to cope with a tricky wind, with more to come, it didn't prevent some hatc ...

You might recognize Mark Tomsett from previous reports. We first fished together in 2011 and at that time he'd only been fly fishing a few months although you wouldn't have thought so, because even then he was a pretty impressive caster. I remember Mark landed his first ever brown that day ... something he's been hooked on ever since. He often teams up with long time mate Coozer and he sent me this report of their latest trip. For more info on DOC huts in the Taupo/Turangi area visit www.doc.govt.nz Hey Mike, How you doin ? Coozer and I spent last weekend in the Kaimanawas. Well ... actually t ...

More great fishing on the Tongariro over the weekend ... no monsters but the fish kept coming. For instance on Sunday I fished with Grant and Ricky and although we didn't get on the river until midday {because some of us had work to do} we'd landed close to twenty fish between us by 4.00 pm. The calmer damp weather of the last few days provided ideal conditions for some good hatches. The fish quickly tuned onto any ascending mayfly nymphs and throughout the day the birds were busy mopping up the duns as they became airborne after breaking free of the rivers grip. I haven't been out after dark ...

Plenty of action on the river over the last week and despite it being Labor weekend the Tongariro wasn't too packed. The town stretches received a bit of a bashing but away from the car-parks angling pressure was light and it wasn't difficult to find a place to fish. For the last few weeks there has been an influx of first time visitors to the fishery, particularly anglers from the U.S.A. Greg Jacobs pictured above is a retired District Attorney and was blown away with his day on the river ... hooking up fifteen times. Although Ronnie Peters and his wife Sue live in New York, Ron is actually a ...

I forgot to mention the track maintenance teams have been busy again, this time re-routing the track on the TRB above the Island Pool stretch. The old track was getting a bit close to the edge because of erosion. They hadn't finished when I took these shots but I assume when the work is complete that you'll still be able to access the shiny new steps they put in a month or two back that lead down to Judges. The wind has finally eased and it looks like a nice morning out there ... better get the gear on. Tight lines guys Mike ...
