A river to yourself ... Thu 26th October, 2017
Another pretty quiet few days on the river as everything gradually slips into summer mode. Now that the big winter runs are over on the Tongariro a lot of anglers prefer other venues. Some days its as if you have the place to yourself and with less anglers there's a much more relaxed vibe on the river so you can just take your time and enjoy the day. At the start of the week when I pulled into Red Hut car park {at the crack of nine o clock} it was empty. And as I fished my way up I never saw a soul until I reached the Fan Pool. By the time I got up there Norman was fishing the head and had alr ... |

Blue Pool access track now closed. Tue 24th October, 2017
After a bit of a false start at the beginning of the month contracters have now moved their machinery in. The gate is closed and there is no longer public access until further notice. The logging operation is expected to take at least six weeks. But understandably everyone is concerned about what happens when the work is finished. Don't get me wrong there are still heaps of visitors in town and all of the bach's and holiday homes where we live are full. But with more venues now open, angling pressure has eased a little on the Tongariro and you shouldn't have any problem finding somewhere to wet a line. Fish numbers are high at this time of year and with a few "silvers " continuing to move up anglers are ... |

More rain and fish to come. Sun 8th October, 2017
There was a brief respite in the awful Spring weather for the start of the school holidays. But since then its been a return to the wet and windy stuff on the Tongariro. Flows fell back to thirty cumecs for a day or two but heavy overnight rain has bumped them back up to forty plus.I'm sure most non-fisho's are well and truly fed up with the seemingly never ending rain and showers. But its probably been one of the factors that has contributed to this years amazing fishing. My mate Alan has been over from Oz for the past ten days and he's had a ball. He was last here a few years ago with his wi ... |
