Tongariro drop-shot rig. Fri 28th September, 2018
One of the biggest changes I've noticed on the Tongariro since I first started fishing it around twelve years ago is that anglers nowadays are far more likely to embrace modern techniques. When I was first introduced to the river the methods most often used were nymphing with an indicator, wet-lining and at very specific times of the year dry fly. This was the way it had been done for years and you had some very funny looks from the "regulars" if you fished the river any other way. It was also, a difficult and often intimidating river for beginners or visitors to master. Unless you could affor ... |

I said I'd let you know... Fri 21st September, 2018
I said I'd let you know so stuck to the plan and yesterday drove straight to Koura Street. There was only one car parked up when I arrived. And as I crossed the swing bridge a quick glance right and left revealed two anglers in the Hydro and a couple more in Breakfast and Major Jones ...so not too bad. The track maintenance crew had been busy and as I walked down to Judges the air was filled with the smell of fresh cut grass. It was a beautiful Spring morning and this was the first time for a while it had been pleasant enough to head out in shirt sleeves. The pool was empty when I got there an ... |

After the release. Wed 19th September, 2018
The recreational release had the usual effect and as the river cleared and flows settled back the Tongariro switched on. I got on the river early Sunday and from the get go had some great fishing. My first port of call...well ...where else but the Braids. The fishing from the lodge down has been so consistent the last couple of months that its difficult to go past it. It hasn't been a case of if you catch ... more a case of how many. I was joined later in the morning by Pat Dobson, who it turned out was related to "a friend of a friend". Its a small world here in New Zealand sometimes. Anyway ... |

Rod Benders! Fri 14th September, 2018
Another spell of excellent sport on the Tongariro and surrounding rivers with some real rod benders caught since the last report. Many of the rainbows the last month or so have been in superb condition and although kelts figure more often at this time of year there are still plenty of fresh fish moving up. I fished with Des last weekend and we had a blast again in front of the lodge. Its definitely been one of the hot spots on the river this winter and as you'll see later is still producing the goods ... if you're prepared to think a little bit about your approach. Because its been so consiste ... |

All on again after last weekends blip. Wed 5th September, 2018
The Tongariro attracted hundreds of anglers again last weekend. On Saturday for instance the car parks were already filling up at first light and it wasn't long before most of the popular spots were occupied. My mate Dave and his family were down from Auckland and I'd arranged to fish with them for a couple of days. Unfortunately the 'fishing" generally on the weekend was a shadow of what it had been. Although I must emphasise at this point its bounced back big time since ... more later. We caught plenty of fish. Unfortunately the gleaming, fin perfect rainbows that featured in the last report ... |
