Quick Update. Sun 28th September, 2014

There were small pods of fish moving through the lower river late yesterday afternoon.But with the AB's playing, the river was deserted at 10.00 am this morning and I only saw one angler between the Hydro and the road bridge. Ideal conditions today ... overcast and so far not a breath of wind but its forecast to pick up later. Guess where I'm off too now ? Sunday 3.00 pm Just got back ... more runs pushing through earlier this afternoon with some good fish amongst them. Mike ... |

I've had easier weeks ... Fri 26th September, 2014

Weather-wise we've had it all this week. On Monday I was on the river in some of the most unpleasant conditions I've fished in for a while as another volatile front bringing icy cold winds and squally showers swept across New Zealand. The rain fell as snow on higher ground and eventually caused the closure of the Desert Road but this should provide some great skiing for families venturing up to the slopes during the school holidays. The last couple of days has seen a return to warm Spring sunshine and despite the fishing continuing to be as unpredictable as the weather it isn't putting anglers ... |

Spring has sprung. Wed 10th September, 2014

Another pleasantly warm spell of Spring weather in Turangi and most days by mid-morning anglers have been fishing with shirt sleeves rolled up. With the river low and clear we're still waiting for that really big push of fresh run fish to spread through the Tongariro and so far the consistent action continues to be from the road bridge ... downriver. I fished with Kent Price on the weekend and after a pretty lean time on the middle river we hooked several reasonable fish in the Braids area. With the warmer weather comes more insect activity and already anglers are reporting a few splashy rises ... |
