| Update 4th October 7.45am After met service issued a severe weather warning for National Park we had periods of very heavy rain and thunderstorms last night. One lightening strike knocked all power out and was probably the biggest I've seen. The Tongariro peaked at 264 cumecs and is currently at 164 cumecs...stay in bed guys. Update 4th October 6.15pm The Tongariro has dropped quickly throughout the day and is now running at around 30 cumecs. Still carrying a lot of color but by tomorrow things should be perfect. At last.

| As everyone predicted last weekends recreational release and the little bit of rain a day or two later has seen the best runs so far this year. As the levels fell back and the color dropped out Sunday was especially good and you just couldn't miss, in fact I had my best day on the river for quite some time. Admittedly not every fish was a classic fresh run rainbow, there were some recovering fish and a couple of smaller silver fatties but most of them were in great nick and I had an exciting days sport as more runs came through. | The much needed rain finally arrived but it was no where near enough and only raised the level of the Tongariro to just over 28 cumecs. However this weekend we have the first of the recreational releases for a while. On Saturday from the Poutu intake between 9am to 3pm and again on Sunday from the Rangipo intake between 8am to 4pm. The nuisance south westerly has been with us most days which always puts a few off and may go some way to explain the unusual lack of anglers earlier in the week. "Summer" rolls on.

| The summer-like conditions roll on and its been a fabulous week to be out and about on the Tongariro. With the river still clear and hovering around 24 cumecs most anglers are hoping for some of the wet stuff but be careful what you wish for. You only have too look at the archived reports to see that we usually get some pretty heavy rain during the next couple of months. Unfortunately it tends to come in big dumps and the river floods. This scrubs the river bed clean and the strong flows wash many of the weaker recovering fish straight back to Lake Taupo. This affects our late spring and summe ... |

Keep on running

| The runs continued throughout this week with more reports from anglers of double figure days and lost fish. Many chose to concentrate their efforts around the town pools with migrating trout again having to run the ever growing gauntlet below the bridge. Later on the weekend I had writer Tina Shaw out after lunch for a half day. Her husband Bruce is a keen angler and prefers to fish the dry fly with a split cane rod but Tina wanted to learn some of the more traditional methods used on the Tongariro.
