Watchout the toe-rags are about!

Make sure you don't leave anything of value in your vehicles guys, its toe-rag season again. I parked up at Red Hut early on Saturday and the police rang me at 2.00pm to let me know that someone had put a rock through my passenger side window. They'd also done over a thousand bucks worth of damage to the truck next to mine ... for a few dollars left in the ash tray. I heard later there had been another vehicle damaged in the same car park. A big thank you to the anglers who rang me to give me the bad news. If you are out and about and see anything suspicious give the local police a call on +64 ...

It seems that every time Myles gets a trout anywhere near his chopping board there's a story to tell. You'll remember the release of young trout from Tarawera that caused so much controversy in 2012 ... well Myles was about to prepare this one for its new home in his smoker when he noticed the pink mark near its eye. He emailed me the pic to ask my opinion. I'd had another from someone else sent to me earlier in the year. Plus I caught one myself a few months back which I thought might be one of those tagged fish. Both of them proved to be false alarms. Too be honest I didn't really know what ...

Myles latest trip.

Its always good to hear other anglers experiences of their day on the river and Myles sent me this great account of his last trip to the Tongariro...cheers mate appreciate it: "Great to catch up with you on Monday last, albeit on opposite sides of the river. Just wanted to send you this blurb about my day on the river, not in the least as the poor old Tongariro has recently been taking a bit of a beating as being “over-hyped”… Sorry it’s taken all week but work has seriously got in the way of fishing! I also just managed to salvage the pic’s (attached) from my drowned iPhone!! So…. ...

At the moment it doesn't seem to matter much where you are on the river, you should get into the action and land a few fish. Greg Koppel {top}hooked up first cast and Dougal who was on vacation from Australia landed this good male fish from the same pool. It was his first time on the Tongariro but it didn't take him long to get the mend and drift right and once he did ... the takes kept coming. There have been runs going through all week. My fishing barometer the Upper and Lower Bridge Pool has been spot on with a reading of between 16 and 18 anglers most days. Today when I drove past there we ...

Now that we've moved to the area permanently our holiday cottage is up for sale. Hera Grove is one of Turangi's best kept secrets located just north west of town well away from any traffic noise in a quiet residential cul-de-sac. This is a magic spot bordered by reserve with uninterrupted views of the surrounding hills and country-side ... properties don't often come on the market here. Fantastic neighbors, easy care fully fenced section with parking for six vehicles plus a huge double garage for the boat and toys. Two double bedrooms, cosy wood-burner, a great all day sun deck, wood shed, fish ...

No surprises today ... at the risk of over hyping the Tongariro ... it fished its nuts off! I was tied up first thing and couldn't get on the river until 9.00 am. Meanwhile Myles had text me to let me know he'd got up early and walked up to his favorite middle river pool. He had the place to himself and it was going off big time. So I drove up to see for myself, all be it from the opposite bank. By the time I got there he was into rainbow number twelve! Second cast my indicator slid under as a jack picked up the globug. While I was unhooking it I looked across and Myles was in again but this t ...

Update Sunday ... Tongariro firing again.

With the flow now down to fifty and the Tongariro that ideal chalky green color it was going to be a busy Sunday on the river. I was fishing with Nick and his girlfriend Mackenzie so we set the alarms and were the first to arrive at the Red Hut car park just on light. By the time we walked up to Boulder Reach the TLB was already beginning to fill up but our intention was to fish a little further up so we carried on. Its usually worthwhile to get on the river early, especially on the weekend in the middle of the winter spawning runs and today was no exception. We hit fish almost straight away a ...

Is the Braids making a comeback?
Fri 7th August, 2015

Now here's a welcome sight and one I haven't seen for a long time ... anglers fishing just above the old Spot X. I'd love to see this much missed stretch of the Tongariro make a comeback. And for the last few years its always the first place I check out after we get a good fresh. The Braids is one of the most unstable sections of the river made up largely of alluvial deposits washed down from other parts of the Tongariro. Even before they deliberately altered the rivers course here, there would be marked differences after every flood. I mentioned a few reports ago that there may be the beginni ...

Tongariro up again.

The rain the Met Service had been forecasting for most of the week finally arrived overnight as a very active low traveled south east across the country. The almost monsoon conditions woke me up in the middle of the night and it continued to bucket down for hours. Gail finds the sound of rain on a tin roof quite soothing and it sends her off to sleep. Unfortunately it drives me nuts and I was awake most of the night trying not to listen to it. At 6.30 am I gave up and sods law just as I dragged my bleary eyed butt out of bed ... it stopped. I've lost count of the number of freshes we've had th ...

Myles and his son Adam sent me these last night. They were in town visiting a mate over in Amori and managed to get in a sneaky couple of hours on the middle river before heading back home. " Hi Mike only had two hours fishing, but it was great… Truckloads of hook ups and about 7 landed. Adam connected with a lot of fish so he’s pretty rapt!" The middle and upper river has been fairly consistent for weeks with the upper stretches in particular getting a lot of attention. Looking at the photographs Myles emailed me ties in with reports from other anglers that there's a mixture of fish in th ...
