More rainbows this week.

| Now that things have quietened down after the school holidays there seem to be a lot more rainbows around this week. Last weekends mini fresh encouraged more fish to move up but not in the big numbers everyone was hoping for. However amongst the fish trickling through there were some nice silver rainbows...so no complaints from most anglers. The first half of the week was a little slow again but the fishing has steadily improved and for the first time this winter I caught fish in three out of the four spots I tried today. | After a brief, slightly quieter spell on the river at the beginning of the week the number of anglers using the river has steadily increased each day. Mike and I headed up to Boulder Reach yesterday and when we got back there were thirteen vehicles in Red Hut car park. We'd met several anglers while we were up that way and all of them had found it tough going, with only a couple of pretty ordinary fish landed. The overall quality of trout caught seems to have declined the last few days with just a sprinkling of good fish amongst the small, toothy jacks and "residents" that most fisho's are rep ... |

| A beautiful winter morning in Turangi today with hardly a cloud in the sky. As you'd expect anglers were out early this morning and both Bridge pools were occupied from first light. I stuck to the game plan again yesterday and concentrated on the less often fished places. This time from Admirals down ... and did ok. Still plenty of anglers around but nowhere near the numbers we had on the weekend and I never saw anyone at all {during the morning} where I eventually ended up fishing. Patchy but ...

| We're already into the second week of the school holidays and its been a busy one again in Turangi. A lot of the baches are occupied and the Tongariro has seen plenty of anglers keen to wet a line. There have been some good fish moving up but the "fishing" continues to be patchy. So its still very much a case of being in the right place at the right time. Those out and about early have usually given themselves the best chance by getting at some water first ... because all the popular spots have been thrashed by lunchtime. | The forecast was spot on and we had more torrential downpours overnight. When I looked at the graph this morning I fully expected it to be showing couple of hundred cumecs. But it was in the low forties! I've just got back from town and the river is flowing that nice milky green and already in the thirties. Its highly fishable and there are plenty of anglers out and about. And as soon as I've finished this I'll be joining them. A few more heavy showers this afternoon and then the rest of the week looks more settled with lighter winds. It should be good guys See you out there Mike ... |

| After a night of heavy rain and strong north westerly winds there were no "dry fly purists" at the bridge this morning. Flows peaked at 273 cumecs but have already dropped back significantly and are currently around one hundred and forty. More heavy rain and gusty westerlies forecast for Central North Island today and tomorrow. And as I'm typing away the skies have darkened and there's thunder rumbling away as the rain beats against the office window. Winter wonderland.

| The fishing has been a bit like the weather and gradually improved as the week wore on. If you've been up and about early {particularly the last few days} the banks of the Tongariro have looked like a "winter wonderland." And it was pretty chilly until the weak winter sun chased away the heavy overnight frosts. Met Service had forecast rain earlier this week but it didn't amount to much. Unfortunately that tricky south easterly returned for a day or two which is a pain when you're nymphing because it makes good mending almost impossible, and badly affects "the drift."
