A little bit of a change in the weather and the fishing since these pics were taken last Thursday. Up until then anglers all along the river were reporting plenty of fish in the five to six pound bracket ... most of them ripe hens in fantastic condition. I spent Thursday on the upper river and had a great time between Boulder Reach and the Fan despite the miserable weather. The whole stretch fished well for most of the day. And surprisingly until I ran into Mike I hadn't seen another angler all day on my side of the river. Boulder Reach is a pool Mike knows well and it wasn't long before the i ...

As expected the Tongariro has switched on big time since last weekends fresh. Some of the rainbows caught the last few days are without a doubt some the best fish we've seen in the river for several years. I was first in Judges yesterday and from the get go it was all on. By 9.00 am a few more anglers turned up and everyone caught fish while I was there. Most of the rainbows were in wonderful condition and gave the gear a really good workout. Inevitably when you get fish like this running not all of them were landed and most anglers lost fish at some stage. The two Taranaki anglers pictured ri ...

The wind and rain forecast for Central North Island arrived yesterday and continued all day and most of the night before easing to showers. Flows increased steadily and peaked in the wee hours at 367 cumecs. They dropped back briefly to 281 cumecs but when these shots were taken they were on the rise again registering over three hundred. Met Service has issued the following: "A large complex low pressure system is expected to move slowly east over central New Zealand during Friday and Saturday. An associated front crosses the North Island, bringing a period of severe gale northeasterlies and a ...

Another beautiful crisp winter day in Turangi today...nothing like last weekends weather. Boy...was it cold! I was on the river all day Sunday and despite the thermals I didn't feel my feet again until I got home late that afternoon. But it was worth it and I saw some cracking fish caught. Mind you I had to move around a bit because the fishing seems to be like the weather and changes everyday. Richard and son Mark timed it just right and had a great time on the upper river. They were on their way to Auckland for the game and had a stop off in Turangi to break the journey. There have been repo ...

Not everyone's cup of tea ... but there's no -getting away from it, the Bridge Pool is the place to be at the moment. While the rest of the fishing on the Tongariro continues to be pretty ordinary this short stretch is providing more than enough action for local anglers. I took these shots at first light today and there were already fourteen just below the road bridge and another eight or nine further down river. It usually pays to be "the early bird" here but during the winter runs you can expect plenty of company no matter what time you get up. As I arrived with my camera there were anglers ...
