A little bit of wind today but as the school holidays draw to a close anglers and their families have enjoyed some beautiful winter sunshine here in Turangi. For many, the frosty, finger numbing mornings of the last few days are all part of the magic of winter steel-head fishing but I have to admit the older I get the more difficult it is to leave the comfortable glow of the log burner and get out to the garage to pull on those damp, cold waders. I know I said the last report would be it for a little while but I thought I'd better give you a quick heads up ... after a patchy start to the week the Tongariro is finally beginning to fire. As expected the combination of Monday's fresh and this weeks wintry weather had the desired effect and for the past few days fish numbers have been quietly increasing. I've been deliberately fishing the same six spots all week ... and today for the first time I caught fish in every one of them. Most of them were fit strong jacks, some with that rich red spawning flush. All of them were pretty determined ...

After twelve hours of non - stop rain the Tongariro peaked at around two hundred cumecs. By early Tuesday morning it had dropped back to fishable levels and despite the heavy color there were already anglers trying their luck in the Bridge Pool at first light. This is exactly what we needed and should encourage some better runs. The Met Service is warning of much colder weather spreading up the country on Wednesday with snow to 600 meters.
