Where'd they go!

A little bit of a blip the last few days ...but prior to that there were some superb rainbows caught. With fish beginning to move up in numbers the lower river and town pools are getting a lot of attention. And for the last week the majority of anglers vehicles seem to be parked up at the Bridge and Bain car parks. But Herekeikei street has also been popular for those heading for the TRB of the lower bridge pool ... and of course the rejuvenated Braids. All of the spots accessed from these car-parks fished really well prior to the mini fresh earlier this week. But since then things have slowed ...

I ended the last report with the words "but you never know" and that's just how its panned out because this morning there was a big improvement in the fishing. Yesterday the "early birds" at the bridge pools had some great sport. And although things had tailed off a bit by mid-morning, the runs continued again today. They're still not big runs but there have been some cracking fish caught over the last thirty six hours or so. I bumped into Norman on the river earlier today and he had half a dozen good fish yesterday, including the five pounder below. Many thanks for the pic mate. I was expecti ...

Again this week not that much to write about since the last report. Like everyone else I was hoping the little fresh we had earlier this week might have kicked things off a bit. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case so far. Anglers fishing the bridge pools this morning did ok and I saw a fish or two caught from both banks. But there was a lot of casting between takes...and I think that pretty much sums up the fishing on the rest of the Tongariro at present. Now that the river has settled back its flowing that nice creamy green color and looks spot on for the weekend. But I have a feel ...

With Oueen's birthday weekend behind us for another year its been much quieter around town the last few days. As always during the holiday the Tongariro and nearby rivers had a lot of attention with most of the car-parks occupied at some time or other. Overall I don't think anglers found it easy but there were fish around if you could find them. Bill hooked this fresh run fish in Big Bend. But there have been fish trickling through the Braids and lower river most of the week. Still no big runs and without that nice "spread" of fish you have to keep on the move and even re-visit likely places d ...

Creel Tackle / Vision Australia flyfishing clinic.

I spent the day yesterday at Creel Tackle's fly fishing clinic sponsored by Finnish tackle manufacturer Vision ... and what a fun day out it was. The morning session was presented by Antti Vapulla and Des Armstrong who have both represented their respective countries in fly fishing ... so we were in good hands. Despite the fact that it was funded by one of Europe's biggest tackle companies and the idea was to promote the brand, you never felt this was the case and both of them did a great job. Many of the advances in modern fly fishing methods and tackle stem from competition angling. However ...
