Just a quick update because I have to head home for a couple of days to see my darling...if I leave it any longer I'll forget the way. This is Stephan Baumberger who I ran into in Judges just after he had caught this brace on a dark scruffy no name nymph. Stephan is originally from Switzerland but now lives in my neck of the woods on the Kapiti Coast. He is the owner/chef of a very popular restaurant aptly called "Stephans". This fishing trip had a culinary theme because he regularly comes up with tasty trout ideas which he shares with readers of NZ Trout fisher magazine and he needed more ing ... |

It's been a funny ole week with a real mixture of trout in various stages of their spawning cycle. There is still no sign of a sustained run just a continuation of sporadic pulses of fish which have been a feature of the river for a few weeks now. Catch it right and you'll have a good time...catch it wrong and you'll go away disillusioned and disappointed vowing never to return. I was having a conversation with local guide John Somervell this afternoon and the timing of the spawning runs came up. Update Monday 20th June 12.00pm. The Tongariro peaked at around 42 cumecs over the weekend and is now flowing at 34.6 cumecs with just slight color. Reports suggest more small runs came through but again its a case of right place at the right time. As always those that are prepared to move around will generally be more successful. I would expect more browns making their way back to continue turning up and if last year is any thing to go by it wouldn't surprise me if someone landed a fresh run fish...but it is getting on a bit for them now. When nymphing the tried and tested formula of globugs ... |

Update Tuesday 15th June 5.00 am. The Tongariro is currently flowing at 37.6 cumecs and slowly falling. The conditions are spot on and there should be lots of happy anglers around however its still pretty quiet on the river. Reasonable numbers of fish around yesterday and the few anglers I met had all caught. Cloudy start today so no frost but still a bit nippy first thing. More rain and strong winds are forecast for the weekend especially Saturday. This will get a few more moving but ideally we need the temperatures to drop and stay down. Heading upriver this morning so I'll let you know. Rep ... |
