| Another crisp start to the day in Turangi this morning but at last that bitterly cold southerly has gone. Boy was it cold on the river earlier in the week. Only one angler below the bridge this morning and the lower Bridge Pool was empty. There are fish sneaking through but still no big runs and its very much a case of being in the right place ... at the right time. Some fish did come through on the weekend and despite the biting wind there were several locals lined up in the bridge pools. I was pretty keen to have a good look at the Braids after the fresh. | It poured down for most of the night and by 5.00am this morning the flow chart had climbed to 222 cumecs. But by the time I took these, they had already fallen to one fifty. The rain has eased for the time being, but there's more on the way with some heavy falls forecast as we head towards the weekend. We get these weather patterns around this time every year and if you look at the May reports for the last few years its always the same mix of heavy rain and freshes. This often triggers a temporary improvement in the "fishing". But in the past its always fizzled out until the runs get well unde ... |

A better week.

| The forecast rain arrived over the weekend but it didn't amount to much. Flows did increase and although there haven't been any big runs it did encourage a few fish to move. Most of the "freshies" caught seem to be smaller fish, around two to three pounds but anglers also report the odd better fish amongst them. I bumped into Steve in Major Jones and he'd just caught the one, pictured left, wet-lining in the tail of the pool. When I first arrived local guide Kunio Onishi {well known for his Skagit and Scandi casting} was working his way down the pool and he'd already landed a couple of browns. ... |

Rain on the way.

| Mother Nature seems to have been a bit confused the last few weeks ... just like the fish! The drifting leaves and late autumn fungi paint one picture but the warm temperatures and lovely summer-like days paint another. I think the fishing generally is still hard going and most of the reports have a distinct lack of current fishy photos. We get this lean spell every year but this year it began earlier and has dragged on a bit. It reminds me a little of 2016 and if you click on May for that year you'll see what I mean. But the fish will eventually have to "go for it" and some of the contributin ... |

Right place...right time.

| I've found the fishing much better the last couple of days. But its still very much a case of right place, right time. And it also helps if you're prepared to vary your tactics and approach, to mix things up a bit. I fished with Grantly yesterday and we headed up the TRB above Red Hut with five rods between us all rigged slightly differently ... and it paid off. The upper river always looks magnificent, especially on a crisp, clear late autumn morning. And because things have'nt really kicked off yet, angling pressure is still minimal on the Tongariro. | Over the weekend there'd been a bit of a picket line forming below the bridge. So this morning I decided to check out the the lower bridge from the TRB just in case the rain over the last couple of days had kicked things off. But my heart sank a little as Blue and I walked along the public footpath that runs next to the fence on the right of Whitewater Lodge. For in the distance we could hear the beep, beep, beep and clanking of the digger working just upriver.
