Well done! ... Bill Wed 20th May, 2015

A lot more anglers around today. Local reports have been banging on about the outstanding fishing on the Tongariro for several weeks and now others are coming to see what all the fuss is about for themselves. I fished with Bill Mckinnon and his brother Ken for half a day. Bill has been a Tongariro regular since the 1970's but had never caught a brown. That all changed this morning when he landed this 9lb 4 oz beauty after a 15 minute battle. A lovely sunny Autumn day in Turangi today but its grey skies tomorrow with the return of wind, rain and showers. Just a short report again today. But nex ... |

The Tongariro keeps on firing. Mon 18th May, 2015
With flows back to a just about perfect 35 cumecs, normal service has resumed and the Tongariro is firing on all cylinders again after the latest fresh. The river is carrying that slight milky color, ideal for nymphing but despite this angling pressure is still incredibly light. I spent the day with Myles and his partner Belinda and although we briefly shared the first pool of the morning with two other anglers, that was it ... and the rest of the time we had the river to ourselves wherever we fished. With plenty of food in the water after Fridays fresh the fish were eager to take advantage of ... |

Tongariro up again and Saturday update. Fri 15th May, 2015
The Tongariro flow rate peaked at around 300 cumecs but has dropped a little and is now at 240 cumecs. This is the third fresh in as many weeks, although we've got off lightly compared to other parts of the country. More heavy rain forecast later as New Zealand is hit with three separate low pressure systems simultaneously, so levels could rise again later today.. UPDATE 7.00 AM SATURDAY 16th MAY The Tongariro has fallen back quickly to 56 cumecs and will be fishable today as the color continues to drop out. Fish will keep out of the main flow until it drops a little more so don't be in too mu ... |

Another fresh. Tue 12th May, 2015

The clouds rolled in again late yesterday and it poured down for most of the night. The steady rain and gusty winds have now eased but are set to return for a time later today with an improving situation as we head into Wednesday. We often get these moist north westerly weather systems in May and its not uncommon for the level of the river to be up and down like a yo-yo all month. This usually has a positive effect on fish numbers and the fishing in general and there are all kinds of theories put forward to explain this ... but these are likely to be the top three: * The colored water associat ... |

Brown Bonanza ! Sat 2nd May, 2015
I'm running out of superlatives to describe the brown trout fishing on the Tongariro this year, it really is remarkable. After the downpours we had a few days ago I expected the river to fish well but this morning was something else and was probably the best brown trout action I've seen for a few years. I fished alongside Steve Forsman and his son Cameron and between us we must have played a dozen browns during a four hour period, landing just over half of them. The aftermath of a fresh often sparks off a bit of a feeding frenzy when the fish mop up insects displaced as the flood waters rise. ... |
