First fresh for a while.

| After some heavy overnight rain across the plateau the Tongariro rose briefly to seventy plus cumecs. Its already dropped back to around thirty but the extra volume, color and the much colder temperatures forecast from Tuesday on is just what we need and should get some fish moving. An endangered species.

| Fly fishermen seem to have become an endangered species on the Tongariro ... I guess a lot of anglers are waiting for that first big run. But its early days and before that happens we'll probably need a sustained drop in temperature and some volume in the river. At the moment we're stuck in this cycle of sunshine and showers and it will take a bit more than showers to make a difference. However there is wind and some rain on the way ... according to the forecast! Despite this the fishing hasn't been too bad. Tongariro Update.

| Work began this afternoon downriver of the SH 1 road bridge to repair the stone wall that reinforces the bank on the TRB that extends towards the bottom end of Herekiekie Street. The machines moved in and bull-dozed the island to create a dam at the top end of the right hand channel to divert the river. This will enable them to place more boulders along the bottom of this stretch of wall to strengthen it. | Even though we've had another week of showers with the odd torrential downpour most of the fish have stayed put in the lake. I think the flow graph crept past thirty nine cumecs at one stage but for the majority of anglers it made very little difference to the fishing. There were a few browns caught close in while the river was carrying some color but the rest of the time a lot of anglers struggled. Some small pods went through again this week, unfortunately they were well spread out and it was a case of blink ... and you missed them.
