Back to reality.

| Right!...back to reality after a couple of weeks in the Whitsunday Islands. We'd never been there before. But we had family over from the UK for the Commonwealth Games and had arranged to meet up in Brisbane after the closing ceremony. We then joined my brother and his wife for a vacation together on the chain of islands off the east coast of Queensland more popularly known as the "Whitsundays". We'd been told by friends that it was a stunning part of the world and boy they weren't wrong. Some of the views were breathtakingly beautiful. Day three at the bridge.

| Its full speed ahead at the bridge this morning and its amazing whats been achieved in three days. It looks as if they're re-shaping the true left bank using material excavated from the island. The temporary gravel dam has slowed the flows directly below the bridge and at present it looks more like a small lake than a river. Eventually when the new channel has been created this dam will be opened up allowing the river to do its own thing. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. One things for sure there will be some new water to explore both here and further down. Tight lines and see ... |

| A cold but stunning autumn morning in Turangi today. At the moment that bone chilling southerly has all but gone. However Met Service is predicting more wind and rain in parts of the North island later today. But this time from the north west, so it should feel a little bit warmer. Day two of operations at the Bridge Pool and a huge amount of material has been moved around. The river below the old Bridge Pool looks more like a featureless canal, all the way down to where it splits above Vera's and the Braids. | First of all apologies for the images above but I only had my clockwork phone on me as I drove into town this morning. When I crossed the bridge, work had only just begun. But there were already dramatic changes as a digger and bull-dozer worked together to accomplish the planned diversion. I had a chat with {someone I assume} was one of the engineers on site. And although it was difficult to hear him because of the bitterly cold southerly howling along the stop bank. The place to be.

| The fishing on the Tongariro continues to be pretty challenging. Rainbows are still a bit thin on the ground but there are some nice browns in the river. Local clergyman Father Michael Fransham spotted three of them fairly close together in a middle river pool. And after a few casts tempted this fish on one of his favourite soft hackle patterns, suspended under the dry. But it doesn't always work out.
