Hit or miss... Wed 21st March, 2018

Not much to report because although the fishing is improving it continues to be pretty hit or miss on the Tongariro ... even if you move around. There are still a lot of juvenile rainbows in the river and if you're using small patterns under the indicator you'll inevitably hook a few during the day. For a few weeks now you'll have noticed their splashy rises {often when there's nothing obvious hatching at the time] and its a fair bet they're taking passion vine hoppers. Not another fresh! Mon 12th March, 2018

After another deluge on Wednesday night the Tongariro was heavily coloured as we headed into last weekend. Flows peaked at 123 cumecs but once the rain cleared they dropped back quickly. Unfortunately when I got on the river early Friday morning a tricky southerly had picked up and although I don't mind casting in the wind it does make mending difficult. Prior to the latest fresh, things were starting to improve and there were a few more fish around. A bit of an improvement. Thu 1st March, 2018

Most anglers would agree that its been a challenging few weeks on the Tongariro. But I think we're over the worst and from now on things will improve as we head into Autumn. Already the mornings are much cooler and overhead you can here the honking of Canada geese as they fly to their autumn feeding grounds. Soon the deciduous trees will begin to shut down in earnest and on breezy days it will "snow" leaves all along the river bank. My "boatie" friends tell me they've been getting some great conditioned fish from the lake. So although its early days we should start to see a difference over the ... |
