Still summer in Turangi.

| We may be well into March already but we've enjoyed some wonderful summer-like weather in Turangi this week. Mind you, if you're on the river at first light the dawn chill quickly reminds you summer is over. As a further reminder the first of the early autumn mushrooms are making an appearance and in a couple of weeks the tracks along the river will be dotted with fly agaric and white basket fungi. Last weeks fresh kick started some excellent fishing, both for rainbows and browns but the brown trout fishing in particular has been extraordinary. After the fresh.

| As the river settled back after the weekend "rains" the Tongariro switched on big time. By Sunday flows had peaked at around 230 cumecs. Not a huge fresh, but enough to get some fish moving and displace some of the millions of aquatic insects that populate the river bed. Below the surface it must have been like a "bug soup" and the trout were quick to take advantage. With the flows holding steady at 34 cumecs and the river running that lovely milky green color I fished the town pools with Mike and Grant yesterday morning. Spate conditions.

| Overcast again this morning with a little bit of a "northwester" picking up. River levels have been up and down since Friday nights downpours and that will continue until the unsettled weather begins to clear some time tomorrow. The flow graph peaked at around 80 cumecs but the river is currently hovering around the fifty mark and although it retains that milky brown color is very fishable at present. With more rain forecast this will probably alter later today. A lot of anglers won't fish in these conditions. I can understand why ... fly fishing in murky water doesn't do much for the soul ... ... |

| Hi Guys ... the Tongariro has claimed another one of my phones so if you happened to have found one in the last couple of days anywhere between Judges and Big Bend flick me an email or call 07 386 7729. Alternatively leave it at Creel Tackle or Sporting Life. The cicadas are still chirping away and there are a lot of very dark, almost black ones along the upper river. I did ok fishing the riffles and rougher water yesterday with a black foam imitation. When you're drifting one through the hurly-burly of rough water watch it like a hawk because the turbulence can mask the take ... especially if ... |
