Pretty steady on the Tongariro.

| Its been a pretty steady week on the Tongariro with reasonable numbers of silver fish continuing to trickle through. Most of them are in the two to three pound bracket but in amongst them are some surprisingly good trout for the time of year. Overseas anglers are not always prepared for the speed and power of our rainbow trout ... especially that first run and a lot of fish are lost within a few seconds of hooking up. When you see the condition and size of some of the better ones being caught you can understand why. I bumped into this smiling "local face" as I headed towards Kamahi one morning ... |

Plenty of fish in the river but its not easy.

| Up until a couple of days ago anglers fishing the cicada had been getting plenty of interest from rainbows and the odd brown and there were more stories of good fish hooked and lost. Slightly cooler , overcast conditions today which temporarily shut the cicadas up but even before the weather changed they didn't seem to be quite as noisy as they have been ... so may be this years cicada numbers have already peaked. One things for sure they'll be around for a little while yet and now that trout are used to taking bugs at the surface its still well worth trying big patterns with or without droppe ... |
