The lead up to the weekend saw cicada numbers swell ... virtually overnight! I've been on the river most days this past week and on Friday as I walked the middle river access tracks there were cicada husks everywhere, evidence that one of the best broods for years had continued to emerge. On Saturday Gail and I had been invited to spend the day with Glenn and his wife Teresa out on the lake and every-time we got anywhere near the shore the noise was incredible. Hot and Cold.

This week the Tongariro has been a bit like the weather ... hot one day ... cold the next ! As temperatures warmed up again on the weekend you could tell by the noise that more and more cicada nymphs had crawled from their burrows and climbed nearby trees to molt for the final time. Once they'd wriggled free and their wings had hardened they flew off to find a mate ... and the males began to sing. You could hear the noise building along the river and around the leafy streets and gardens of Turangi. A busy week in Turangi.

This Christmas and New Year was probably the busiest I've ever seen Turangi with tourists and holidaymakers everywhere. Most of the motels and holiday homes seemed to be full and on New Years Eve I queued for 30 mins at the super-market check-out. Hopefully some of this Xmas trade found its way into the tackle shops because they’ve had a hard time over the last few years. As expected once Christmas Day was out of the way there were a lot more anglers on the river.
