Just a quick update because I have to head home for a couple of days to see my darling...if I leave it any longer I'll forget the way. This is Stephan Baumberger who I ran into in Judges just after he had caught this brace on a dark scruffy no name nymph. Stephan is originally from Switzerland but now lives in my neck of the woods on the Kapiti Coast. He is the owner/chef of a very popular restaurant aptly called "Stephans". This fishing trip had a culinary theme because he regularly comes up with tasty trout ideas which he shares with readers of NZ Trout fisher magazine and he needed more ingredients for his recipe in the next issue.

The way the fishing in general has been this week, he was lucky not to have ended up doing beans on toast. Anyway the next time you see this pair and I mean the ones on the right, they should look deliciously different. If you're ever down his way call in for a bite to eat and have a look in the stream that runs through the restaurant gardens...it has some huge long-finned eels swimming around in it.
As you can see the rubber legs are still working but in places the river is chokka with green caddis, so that has to be a must try fly. Turn a few rocks over and there will also be plenty of mayfly nymphs on the underside. There seem to be more than usual for "winter" may be a side effect of the milder weather this year. That reminds me there was a trout rising for several minutes on the far side of the Sand Pool when I fished there a few days ago. I came across the "trout whisperer" and his class again, this time he was teaching them how to Czech nymph. This Eastern European technique is something you don't often see on the Tongariro. I've watched some of the visiting Slovenian anglers and in the right situation it works well. The guys had already thrashed this run with the indicator but after a few casts using this different presentation and approach were already hooked up. So it does pay to experiment and think outside the square sometimes...they look pretty happy about it too. Right I'd better load up the truck and get on my way.

See you out there

Mike
