The rain arrived on cue but it didn't affect flows much and the river only rose a few cumecs.

I didn't fish over the weekend but had a great few days on the river leading up to it ...including a couple of days with some fishing mates, Sean and his brother-in-law Luke.

You may have seen them on the reports in the past because whenever they come down to Turangi they always seem to catch the river in a good mood and it was the same this time.

During the two days they landed over thirty fish between them and couldn't put a foot wrong, particularly when they fished my favourite town pool. Both of them are pretty keen on Judges because they've had a lot of fun there on previous trips. Again small nymphs were the way to go and some sort of flashback accounted for most of the rainbows we caught.

They weren't all great fish ... there again that's exactly what you'd expect in November.

In the afternoon we headed upriver but although we all caught fish it was nowhere near as productive for us as the morning session closer to town. We called it a day about 4.00 pm and after a chat back at the car-park decided to head straight to Judges again next morning.

I have to say I had my reservations because Judges often doesn't fish "the same" on consecutive days. And it didn't ... it was even better!

By Thursday the liquor store was running out of Jim Bean and the guys had to head back to Auckland because of work commitments. Luke is a very busy builder and Sean runs Supercars in Australia. But I wasn't going to be rid of them for long because my darling and I had been invited to spend the weekend with them.

Luke and his family live on a life-style block a short drive from the race track in Pukekohe. So as well as being pickled in gin and bourbon for two days we were also off to the circuit as Seans guests.

Neither of us had ever been to a motor sport event before but we had an absolute blast from start to finish and if you've never tried it we can highly recommend it. We were very spoiled and even had a couple of laps in one of the pace cars. And although they didn't go flat out those cars are seriously quick ... what a buzz!

Right ... back to reality. The rain we had over the weekend made very little difference...in fact flows are currently even lower than they were last week. Up until then there were still plenty of fish in the river and as far as I know nothing has changed. The odd good rainbow showing up but expect plenty of recovering fish.

These kelts are keen to feed up and will grab anything looking remotely edible that drifts anywhere near them. We even had a couple go for the indicator dry.

Best nymph for us turned out to be small Flash-back Hare and Coppers again ... but anything with a bit of bling should get you a fish or two.

The wind is finally easing but is expected to return by Wednesday with rain and showers right up to the weekend. I'll be out again in the morning and will then have a much better idea on how things are shaping up out there.

Tight lines

Mike
