More fish move up.

A beautiful winter morning in Turangi today with hardly a cloud in the sky. As you'd expect anglers were out early this morning and both Bridge pools were occupied from first light.
I stuck to the game plan again yesterday and concentrated on the less often fished places. This time from Admirals down ... and did ok.
Still plenty of anglers around but nowhere near the numbers we had on the weekend and I never saw anyone at all {during the morning} where I eventually ended up fishing.
It wasn't until I got into the Braids that I had some company.
I mentioned several months ago that this stretch would be popular during the winter runs and thats exactly how its panned out. Unless you arrive here at first light {or earlier} its unlikely you'll have the place to yourself. Although some of the cars you see parked by Whitewater Lodge will belong to anglers fishing the TRB of the "lower bridge".
I often go over there early afternoon and fish til dark ... which can sometimes be a better option.
 
I fished there with Norman for an hour or so yesterday and when I left around 5.30 pm I think we'd hooked about seven between us.
He told me it had fished ok earlier in the day as well.
But don't expect "non-stop" action ... the fish are coming through in small groups so it'll be all on for ten minutes and then a lull until the next pod moves up.
Norman has a holiday home at the lodge and because its on his doorstep you'll find him here most days during the winter runs.
He reckons it can be an hour between pods at the moment. So give the area a chance before you move on.
I haven't been further than Admirals since the weekend because some of the spots I like to fish when the river's busy are from there down. Most of the time the only company I've had are blue ducks which seem to be thriving on the Tongariro nowadays and its good to see them back in numbers.
With the exception of the brown which picked up a globug {in the tail of Admirals} all the rainbows were caught nymphing Euro style and I'm beginning to wonder how I'd manage without it in some of the places I enjoy fishing.
As the weeks go by there should be a more even spread of fish throughout the Tongariro and spawning redds will gradually appear at traditional sites along the river. Some of the most obvious ones are often seen in places like the tail of the Fan and Big Bend.
A little bit of rain towards the end of the week but otherwise a fairly quiet spell weather-wise.
