After a night of heavy rain and strong north westerly winds there were no "dry fly purists" at the bridge this morning. Flows peaked at 273 cumecs but have already dropped back significantly and are currently around one hundred and forty.
More heavy rain and gusty westerlies forecast for Central North Island today and tomorrow. And as I'm typing away the skies have darkened and there's thunder rumbling away as the rain beats against the office window.
Despite his fly fishing background Blue couldn't care less because he's got some new swimming holes to retrieve his tennis ball from. But for the rest of us... you'd have to be expecting some great fishing at this time of year, when things settle back again.
It looks as if there's a lot more rain to come ... both today and on and off tomorrow. So its very likely that levels will rise again. And depending on how much we get it'll be at least a day or two before the Tongariro is fishable.
I've often said "the only predictable thing about fishing this river is how unpredictable it can be" but I'll be amazed if it doesn't switch on properly after this. This is what typically happens...fingers crossed. Now I've done it! July 2017 Tongariro fires after fresh
