Cold and clear for most of this week providing a stunning winter backdrop all along the Tongariro.
The "fishing" hasn't been quite as stunning but there are fish out there.
I'm not pretending its easy because it isn't.And most anglers you speak to are talking in terms of one or two fish a day if you're prepared to keep at it. But when its like this its easy to just go through the motions and maybe not try as hard as you normally would.
I'm always interested in what other anglers have to say, because you can't be everywhere at once. And from the point of view of compiling a hopefully unbiased report, the information you glean from them is invaluable. Some of the fishermen I've talked to have remarked that "the runs are late this year" ... but are they? This was written around the same time last year June 2017 Report ...sound familiar? The fish are running later ... but when you think about it, this is nothing new.
It's nigh on impossible to predict exactly when the big runs will take place but they can't be far away. There are similarities again this year to whats happened the last few years. Namely a period of tough fishing, peppered with false starts. But run they will, and the mediocre fishing we've experienced the last couple of months will soon be forgotten about.
 
There again I use the words "mediocre fishing" but what we call mediocre a lot of visiting anglers would be delighted with. And they're right. Look at what us "hard done by" locals have to put up with when we fish the Tongariro ... stunning scenery, a beautiful and ok ... sometimes challenging river and overall some pretty good fish ... even when things are slow.
It is difficult to keep motivated when we get these quiet spells. But the majority of the time the pros far out number the cons. Most days this week I've fished all day for maybe four or five fish ... but thats fine. We'd soon get fed up if we caught twenty every time we ventured out.
Driving around, a lot of anglers seem to be concentrated from the middle river down again. And although I've had a couple of forays upriver, personally I think its a little early to get the best out of those upper river stretches.
My fishing barometer hasn't been that busy though and by mid-morning they've all gone home. But I've noticed there's a few more staying on in the lower bridge and Vera's. Speaking for myself I've had fish almost every time I've fished around town...and a little further down. But I've had to be up early and its just a few rainbows each session.
  
I'll be up and at em {complete with thermos} again tomorrow. But I don't expect much to alter... just yet.
The forecast is for a couple more cold frosty mornings tomorrow and Saturday.
And then its all set to change with slightly milder temperatures on Sunday with rain and showers again next week.
There is a chance some of this rain maybe heavy for a time. So if we get some color and volume in the river ... well you never know ... it did the trick this time last year.
