As you'd expect things have changed...

The access track to the Blue Pool car park was reinstated just before Christmas so I took a drive up there for my usual Christmas Day "fish". As you'd expect after a logging operation things have changed...a lot!!

I know it was a grey, dreary old morning which probably made things look a lot worse, but It was a pretty depressing sight.

On a positive note the track has been mostly regraded and although its a bit slippery in places at least you don't need a tank to get down there anymore.

Once you get near the river things improve and unless you glance behind you it looks just the same. I fished Big Bend first and then joined a couple of other Christmas Day anglers in Boulder Reach and caught fish straight away in both spots. However it did quieten down a little by the time Grant showed up mid morning.

Mind you... later on he had a great few hours czech nymphing one of his favourite spots.

You can still expect to catch the odd tired looking kelt. But most of the fish have recovered well. And Grant showed me a pic that evening of one he'd landed which was probably four and a half pounds.

Its a good job he owns a tackle shop because soon after he hooked a much better fish which snapped the tip of his 5 wt.

A little bit of color after the rain of the last couple of days but it looks perfect and at the moment is still around 30 cumecs. I imagine its going to be pretty busy out there for the remainder of the holidays. But with the return of easy access to the TLB of the upper river at least anglers can spread out a bit.

Isolated thunderstorms forecast later today so keep an eye on the flow graphs. And its also still quite breezy out there.

Much better weather predicted for the rest of the week with the wind eventually dying out.

A lot of anglers will no doubt be heading upriver to check out the changes. I found it unexpectedly confusing when I was there because it looks so totally different.

I've fished Big Bend hundreds of times but I actually drove past the old car park ... twice!

I'll sign off with a few more pics of what to expect

Happy New Year

Mike
