Fishing improves again ...

    The fishing on the Tongariro has steadily improved with each passing day this week. And as we head into summer some none to shabby looking fish have turned up.
Although the rash of thunderstorms produced the odd heavy downpour it didn't affect flows that much. But the threat of heavy rain seems to have got some fish moving.
Experienced American angler Paul Prentiss caught fish from town through to the upper river. And a nice mix of well mended kelts with the odd better fish amongst them made his short visit to New Zealand one to remember.
Stretches of the town and middle river have fished well ...particularly for the "early birds".
By the time I got my lazy arse into Judges this morning Greg had already landed a dozen and eventually left with his limit for the smoker.
 
By then temperatures had warmed up and the takes had started to dry up but Athol kept at it and persistence eventually paid off.
Best flies this week ... well, anything with a bit of olive in it has worked for me. Including those bombs from Creel I've been on about. But it seems I gave you a bit of a bum steer on those because I wrote that "Creel has plenty in stock"...well they haven't because they've almost run out of them as I discovered when I went to stock up again yesterday.
Light winds with temperatures in the mid to high twenties for the week ahead. This should provide favourable conditions for "the evening rise" and places like Judges and Boulder Reach would be a pretty good bet for some exciting sport into dark.
This time last year the first of the cicadas started chirping and with this warm spell it wouldn't surprise me if it happens again.
