Blue Pool access?

Hi Mike,
There has been a lot of comment about access to the Blue Pool in the last few weeks, sparked by the appearance of posts on the entrance to the “Blue Pool Road”. The first point to make is that it isn’t a legal road at all, rather an access track which was until recently maintained by the Department of Corrections so that anglers could access the upper Tongariro.

With the closure of the Rangipo Prison and its subsequent sale, the Blue Pool access way is now on private land. There is no easement for public access in place, so to date access for anglers or other users has been at the generosity of the landowners and managers.

The access will be gated in the next week or two, so that the forest blocks alongside the road can be harvested. It’s important to manage access while the harvesting takes place, due to the hazard this represents. We are advised that the harvesting will take up to 6 weeks, during which time the road will be closed to the public. It’s important this closure is respected, as it will provide the opportunity for discussions around enduring access along the track to occur with the landowners.

For any public inquiries, people can contact NZ Forestry Managers office 07 386 8757

Periods of heavy rain and showers the last few days and the river peaked at sixty five cumecs. Its now lingering around forty with some color and is just about perfect.

I popped into whats left of the Braids for a few hours yesterday and as expected it switched on again with the higher flows.

With a tricky west/northwest wind blowing this stretch is a good option because there's no need for long casts. But if you can... stay out of the river when its murky because the fish can be close to the bank... despite the shallow water.

Its been holding plenty of fish for several weeks, with small jelly eggs out fishing everything else. With the right approach you can do well here and everyone I saw there yesterday hooked up.

A showery outlook again for the next few days with Sunday possibly the best day. The wind should also ease over the weekend with a southerly change early next week followed by sunshine and showers before more rain sets in by next weekend.

This will ensure some pretty steady fishing and it should be good out there.

Tight lines

Mike
