A little bit of a slow down again but ...

A little bit of a slow down in the fishing since the last report. There's still plenty of fish to be caught...and still plenty of anglers chasing them but its likely the main runs probably peaked mid August. Don't put your rods away yet though because there's a lot more fantastic fishing to come over the next couple of months particularly either side of any rain. However the numbers of fresh run fish will gradually diminish and recovering kelts will figure more often in anglers catches.
 
Last nights torrential downpours have continued on and off this morning. And when I took Blue for a walk earlier, levels were up on yesterday. At 9.30 am they were running at fifty one and as the thundery showers eased off anglers were already out and about eager to take advantage of the hint of color in the river.
A lot of jacks caught this week and when this happens there's often a run of hens not far away. With more rain to come ... providing the river doesn't blow ... it could be another excellent week ahead on the Tongariro.
 
The river bed of the Tongariro is always well populated with caddis. And green caddis imitations have been taking fish for weeks.
Presently there are lots of horn cased caddis clinging to the the rocks and trout eat these case and all.
The "Brassie" will do a reasonable job of mimicking this small caddis but I've never been entirely happy with it so I'll have a bit of a play next time I'm fumbling around at the vice.
 
Like many anglers on the Tongariro I probably fish some sort of caddis more than any other fly.
The weighted pupa "thingy" {above} is always part of one of my setups and is a fly I have total confidence in. Its by no means an anatomically perfect representation of the real thing but neither are most tried and trusted patterns.
The main thing is the trout seem to like them and at the end of the day that's all that matters.
Caddis or no caddis with spawning rainbows throughout the river and more moving up the globug is still going to catch fish. And all of Dave, Josh and Andrews fish fell for small jelly eggs.
  The forecast is for an unsettled week ahead with rain, thunderstorms and gusty north westerlies moving east across the country. But they're way off the mark as far as Turangi is concerned today and since the showers cleared around lunchtime its been quite pleasant.
If we get the predicted rain keep an eye on the flows but I expect more fish to move up with some better than average amongst them.
The lower river has fished well and should continue to do so. Some of the riffles and runs there are full of migrating fish but with so many anglers heading that way some of them are very, very spooky.
And ominously,a pair of steel gate posts have been cemented in place at the beginning of the track that leads to the Blue Pool car park. This provides access to most of the upper river TLB.
