Things have picked up again since the last report with more fantastic fishing on the Tongariro. There have been fresh runs just about every day this week which has ensured a good even spread of rainbows throughout the river. It doesn't matter where you fish at the moment you will hook up.
Last week it was predominantly hens getting caught and again there have been some crackers landed over the weekend.
But earlier this week anglers were reporting catching big numbers of male trout in full spawning colors.
This usually signals another big run of females isn't far away. And with the river rising rapidly after heavy overnight rain I'd say this was a "gimee" as soon as the Tongariro is fishable.
Flows are at two hundred and climbing and this is already shaping up to be a significant fresh. It'll take a little while for levels to drop and there are weather warnings in place. But don't leave it too late before you get back out there because every man and his dog will be chasing them.
 
The weekends' in particular are extremely busy at the moment ... and not just with anglers. A lot more rafters and canoeists around lately and a few raft fishermen as well.
All the usual "spots" are fishing. But when its like this try and get away from them and look for less popular water. We've had several good freshes this year and after these mini-floods you can usually find a little bit of "new" water to try.
 
You may have to change tactics a little to fish them properly but there's more than one way to skin a cat so experiment a bit.
Its a lot of fun and when you do hit on something that works its very rewarding ... a bit like catching your first trout on a fly you tied yourself.
The rainbows pictured right all came from a short stretch of "nothing" looking shallow water that rarely gets fished.
Places like this are handy when every where else is packed.
 
The heaviest of the rain is expected over the next few hours and it will then ease this evening and overnight.
Flows peaked briefly at 207 cumecs about an hour ago but are on the climb again. Its anyone's guess how high it will go but it looks as if there's a bit more to come.
As soon as flows drop to 80 cumecs I'll be out and about exploring the edges and backwaters ... there's a stretch I've been interested in for a while ... I'll let you know how I get on.
