A cold, wet, miserable day on Sunday and that was just a taste of whats on the way...but some great fish around.

Richard and Mark just had to try their Tongariro luck on the way to the big game.

Another beautiful crisp winter day in Turangi today...nothing like last weekends weather.

Boy...was it cold!

I was on the river all day Sunday and despite the thermals I didn't feel my feet again until I got home late that afternoon. But it was worth it and I saw some cracking fish caught.

Mind you I had to move around a bit because the fishing seems to be like the weather and changes everyday.

Richard and son Mark timed it just right and had a great time on the upper river. They were on their way to Auckland for the game and had a stop off in Turangi to break the journey.

There have been reports of better than average fish showing up for most of last week but again you have to be right place, right time.

Once you get past the Bridge Pool not too many anglers around although more anglers are trying the upper river since the last report.

Dozens of birds working most stretches from mid-morning until later in the afternoon.

All week from mid-morning until late in the afternoon there have been dozens and dozens of birds "working" most stretches. The majority of them are swallows and when they're in large groups like this the collective noun is a gulp.

Wonderful thing this internet.

Anyway with nothing obvious "coming off" and taking into account the time of year the birds are in all probability feeding on hatching midges. For the majority of anglers the globug is first choice but if you fancy a change give buzzers a try.

These tungsten bead peeping caddis bombs have taken a few fish.

This would explain why I've been getting a few fish on buzzers. Olive is always a good start but also try black, brown, orange and of course red or red butt.

Larger flies are also working and as always during the winter some of the fish are taking the big tungsten bomb.

Creel have just had in a great selection of bombs, including these heavy peeping caddis, which the fish seem to like.

Some of the jacks are in superb nick ... like this five pound plus fish from the upper river.

The fishing continues to steadily improve as we head further into winter.

And according to the weather pundits winter is heading our way big time this week with temperatures set to plummet as "A low deepens east of the North Island, possibly bringing severe gales,heavy rain and snow to some central New Zealand areas".

Good news for the ski fields at the start of the school holidays and it will also make for some interesting fishing.

Expect bigger and better fish to show up from now on. But wrap up well...its going to be cold out there.
