A slightly better week.

Its still far from easy out there but a slightly better week on the Tongariro now that things have returned to normal after the holiday weekend.
The river remains low and clear but fish are sneaking through. I stood above Admirals and watched a pod of about a dozen or so move up before I lost sight of them in the turbulence at the head of the pool.
Summer or winter I make a point of fishing the town pools at least once a week. In summer its a great place to chase browns and during the winter runs its a popular stretch for anglers targeting rainbows on their way upriver.
  But my favorite stretch has been a bit hit or miss lately and I've done better a bit further up in Major Jones. Yesterday I dropped on a few straight away .. and all of them took the bomb. This often happens at this time of year and I've mentioned it several times in the past.
The back end of the pool is usually occupied by wet-liners but if you can get through first with your nymphs you can enjoy some great sport using the indicator.
Good wading here now which allows easy casting to the lie. But you'll occasionally lose a fish because you're out a fair way and you have to coax them back to shore to land them. And that doesn't always go to plan.
 
If you're like me and feel the need to turn over a rock now and again, you'll see all sorts of caddis larvae. But most of the fish I've caught this week have taken large nymphs.
The jack above {caught in Boulder Reach} picked up a Size 12 and was one of the better rainbows I've landed recently.
Last weekend the upper river received a lot of attention but I've been up that way a couple of times since then and had the place to myself.
There are still very positive reports from local boaties about the size and condition of the fish in the lake but I suspect we won't see many of them until we get some rain.
