Fresh Report.

Some great fishing on the Tongariro since the last report.
The recent spells of heavy rain saw the river go up and down more often than a toilet seat and the 477 cumec flood at the beginning of the week definitely got some fish moving.
The next couple of months usually signals a decline in the numbers of browns figuring in the reports but at the moment they're still well worth targeting.
These big fish have a "difficult to catch" reputation but if you look for them in the right water at the right time they're more obliging than you may think.
The higher flows and colored water this week provided perfect conditions for chasing browns in the shallows. But its not everyone's cup of tea and many anglers won't even bother fishing during a spate.
All the browns and some of the rainbows in this report were caught fishing the margins in flows exceeding 80 cumecs.
When fishing in "murky water" it obviously helps to use patterns that are more easily visible to the fish.
My own preference is to go bigger and darker. But during the spawning runs most reach for the globugs when the river colors up... its a case of whatever works for you.
Rubberleg flies are also useful.
A really effective combination when fishing colored water is a "Simons Ugly" as the bomb, with a size 12 black rubberleg nymph tied on the dropper off the bend.
 
Not every where is fishing well ... yet! And its still wise to keep on the move ... but even then its not guaranteed.
I fished the middle river with Simon midweek and other than four or five fish out of the Stag we had a tough day. In fact we could have saved ourselves a lot of walking because at the moment the lower river and town pools are still a pretty good bet.
There continues to be a real mixture of fish getting caught. As well as fresh run rainbows and browns we even had one hungry kelt slam the indicator dry when we dropped into Boulder Reach late in the afternoon.

The wet weather has finally cleared and the sun is shining. But there is a strong, cold southwester blowing which isn't predicted to ease until late tomorrow. This probably explains why there were only a few die-hards in the Bridge Pool this morning.
Another cold showery day tomorrow but a much better forecast for Sunday and the early part of next week. And as the river settles back after yet another fresh yesterday, the fishing should be really good.
Expect more fresh run rainbows and the tail end of this years browns to show up.
Make the most of it because there are more rain bearing fronts set to cross the country from Wednesday on.
