Some good fish coming through... Mon 8th May, 2017

Another beautiful autumn morning but things are forecast to change this afternoon. With that in mind anglers were out early to take full advantage of perfect conditions.
The Lower Bridge and the Bridge Pool itself were occupied from first light, as they have been most mornings since the last report ... a sure sign there are some fish moving up.
Again the lower river and town pools have been producing the goods with fit hard fighting rainbows coming through.
These fish are some of the best I've caught for a few years and that bodes well because its still early days as far as the winter runs go.
Sam pictured above had traveled up from "Palmy North" to grab a few hours fishing.
Because of busy work commitments this was his first trip up to his favorite river for over ten months. So he was understandably delighted with the cracking rainbow he landed after a lengthy battle only an hour after he arrived.
Its been the same story with most of the fish I've encountered lately and it pays not to rush things when you hook up.
Be prepared for some blistering runs and stubborn resistance until the fish finally begins to tire. And before you start double check that your knots and the rest of the set up is all good. Because if there is a weakness these better fish will soon expose it.
The river is flowing clear at 27 cumecs so I've stuck to nymphing in one form or another using "naturals". But from now on I'll be reaching for egg patterns more often when things aren't going to plan.
As the days get shorter and the trees continue to shut down for winter Turangi glows in the autumn sunshine. The carpet of leaves underfoot gets ever deeper and its a wonderful time of year to be on the Tongariro.
There are already some great fish in the river and I would expect to see more of the same for the rest of the week.
Looks like more wind, rain and showers from tomorrow into Friday with a better outlook for the second half of the weekend.
This could set things up nicely.
Tight lines
