Its always good to hear other anglers experiences of their day on the river and Myles sent me this great account of his last trip to the Tongariro...cheers mate appreciate it:
"Great to catch up with you on Monday last, albeit on opposite sides of the river. Just wanted to send you this blurb about my day on the river, not in the least as the poor old Tongariro has recently been taking a bit of a beating as being “over-hyped”… Sorry it’s taken all week but work has seriously got in the way of fishing! I also just managed to salvage the pic’s (attached) from my drowned iPhone!!
So…. My morning started out with a brisk 35 minute walk up to ‘Spot X’ from Major Jones bridge and at 6:50 (fishing my feet first) the first drift hooks a beautiful silver hen in primo spawning condition - landed and released. The very next cast, another bullet hooked then dropped, with the third cast of the morning producing a take from another superb silver hen - again landed and released. Three hook-ups before 7:00 doesn’t come any better in the depths of winter and man it was bitter.
Fish followed fish followed fish. The only things missing was any real temperature above freezing point and any other sign of human life - perfect in my books! Mike called about 9:00 at which stage I’d landed 12 fish and dropped a heap more - I described the fishing as “insane". About 20 minutes later Mike was fishing the TLB opposite and quickly into fish.
Not long after I lost a very nice brown on a submerged log - typical of the cunning nature of these fantastic sports-fish.
Long story short, I landed my 20th fish for the day at 12:45 in the same 20 metre stretch of water I’d fished all morning. A couple of wet-liners turned up a bit after lunch, but apart from that, I had the pool to myself for over 5 hours. About as good as it gets - anywhere - ever!
Rewind to the previous night: I planned my day by deciding on where I’m going to fish and how I’m going to fish it. Researching Mike’s website reports for the month of August from previous seasons proved invaluable, not only in terms of what was happening with the fishing, but also with the number of articles on how to fish. Now I’m a firm believer in the old adage that 20% of the fishermen catch 80% of the fish and see no logical reason in being in the 80% who catch SFA (that’s Welsh for ’not very many’)… On that basis I always plan my day and work hard at succeeding.

So armed with knowledge and several hundred flies for all occasions, I took to the river. Today I fished with a three fly rig - bomb in the middle. I tried globugs up top and caddis down below then vice versa… I tried all colours and combinations of egg patterns as well as pupae, larvae, and emerger nymphs both top and bottom. The result was always the same - the fish took the globug…. One of the 20 fish landed did take a grey/green caddis but all the others took a globug - brighter the better with electric pink winning out above all else. Even the brown I lost had grabbed the bright pink fly. I fished a rig without globugs for periods during the day and came up empty, but as soon as I went back, the action hotted up again. Incidentally, I checked the stomach contents of the three fish I took home and other than one lonely caddis, the whole three were completely empty - stark contrast from similar fish ten days earlier!!
It was certainly one of the best days fishing I’ve had, made even more so from trying different things and learning so much in the process".

Cheers
