No surprises today ... at the risk of over hyping the Tongariro ... it fished its nuts off!
I was tied up first thing and couldn't get on the river until 9.00 am.
Meanwhile Myles had text me to let me know he'd got up early and walked up to his favorite middle river pool. He had the place to himself and it was going off big time.
So I drove up to see for myself, all be it from the opposite bank.
By the time I got there he was into rainbow number twelve!
Second cast my indicator slid under as a jack picked up the globug. While I was unhooking it I looked across and Myles was in again but this time he was playing a brown. He had it right in front of him and almost got it to the net but the fish trapped the leader under a sub-merged log ... and that was that!
It was still only nine thirty when I noticed an angler walking up from Cicada with a couple of fish. This turned out to be Ross from Fielding.
He'd been wet lining the lie at the tail of the pool and had caught his limit and a couple besides in an hour.
I fished on and landed two more while Myles was also still at it on the other bank. Around 10.00 am I felt like a change so decided to have a few casts in Cicada. I pulled one first chuck but that was it and I didn't stay long.
As I passed Myles on my way back to the truck he was in again.
I drove up to Red Hut but there were already a few cars parked there so I headed back to Turangi for a coffee and a bite to eat.
For a Monday the river was unusually busy ... much busier than I'd expected. May be the recent fresh and excellent fishing has had an adverse effect on people's health. After lunch ... the next stop was going to be Judges. I hadn't been there for a little while because its had a bit of a thrashing lately but it usually fishes well after a fresh so I thought it would be worth a shot.
While I was making my way over to the swing bridge I spotted a couple of anglers walking towards the Breakfast Pool carrying a trout each and a little further down the track another coming out of the Major Jones also carrying fish.
Ten minutes later I arrived at Judges and joined the three others already there. They kindly moved up so that I could slot in at the tail and over the next couple of hours all of us caught or missed a few rainbows.
Just before they left I spoke to two of them who were both over from Nelson. I enquired how their day had been and how many they'd caught. One of them told me he'd "landed over a dozen", that "there are obviously plenty of fish in the river" and "I've had a great time".
His mate was less forthcoming but gave me a wry smile when he answered " one or two".
With the afternoon sun sinking low in the sky and shining directly in my face, tracking the indicator became impossible so I decided to call it a day and headed back to Koura street.
Back at the truck I spoke to an angler parked next to me from Auckland. He was just packing up and was about to put a couple of fish into the back of his vehicle.
He told me he was a fairly regular visitor to Turangi but had only arrived a couple of hours ago and hadn't got on the river til late.
In that time he'd landed four and kept two.
I asked him if he thought the fishery was being over hyped his reply "no way ... four fish in a couple of hours ... I'm not complaining".
A few more cold frosty mornings before another spell of wet weather over the weekend ... and by the looks of things most of next week. The fishing is already pretty good but there's plenty more to come ... if you can believe the hype that is.
Tight lines guys.
Mike
I haven't heard from Myles yet but have a feeling there'll be an email on its way with a bit of a report and a few pics. |
