With the flow now down to fifty and the Tongariro that ideal chalky green color it was going to be a busy Sunday on the river. I was fishing with Nick and his girlfriend Mackenzie so we set the alarms and were the first to arrive at the Red Hut car park just on light.

By the time we walked up to Boulder Reach the TLB was already beginning to fill up but our intention was to fish a little further up so we carried on.

Its usually worthwhile to get on the river early, especially on the weekend in the middle of the winter spawning runs and today was no exception. We hit fish almost straight away and by the time we left around 11.30 am we were into double figures. The fishing should be excellent this week but set the alarm ... there were nine cars in the car park when we got back to the truck.

If you haven't fished the Tongariro before It will be quieter on weekdays but even so the next few months are the river's busiest.

A couple of nice winter days coming up with cold mornings and light winds for a time. With the Tongariro settling back after Thursdays fresh it doesn't get much better and like I said it should be a cracker of a week.

Tight lines guys

Mike
