Brown Bonanza ! Sat 2nd May, 2015

I'm running out of superlatives to describe the brown trout fishing on the Tongariro this year, it really is remarkable.
After the downpours we had a few days ago I expected the river to fish well but this morning was something else and was probably the best brown trout action I've seen for a few years.
I fished alongside Steve Forsman and his son Cameron and between us we must have played a dozen browns during a four hour period, landing just over half of them.
The aftermath of a fresh often sparks off a bit of a feeding frenzy when the fish mop up insects displaced as the flood waters rise. They were obviously feeding hard and it didn't seem to matter what was on the end, if it mimicked a mayfly nymph or caddis they'd take it.
More pleasantly warm Autumn sunshine in Turangi today but make the most of it ... there's a return to wet and windy weather by Thursday ... now that will keep the fish happy.
Tight lines guys
