Tongariro Update. Sun 6th July, 2014

I know I said the last report would be it for a little while but I thought I'd better give you a quick heads up ... after a patchy start to the week the Tongariro is finally beginning to fire.
As expected the combination of Monday's fresh and this weeks wintry weather had the desired effect and for the past few days fish numbers have been quietly increasing. I've been deliberately fishing the same six spots all week ... and today for the first time I caught fish in every one of them.
Most of them were fit strong jacks, some with that rich red spawning flush. All of them were pretty determined to get away and I lost a third of those I hooked ... but its been fun and well worth the wait.
Although I've tried globugs I haven't caught a thing on them ! Nearly every fish I've hooked this week has taken green caddis or small nymphs ... usually a size 16 dark brown mayfly imitation.
Take care now when wading shallow stretches because you'll often be walking through fish.
Runs and riffles are always worth fishing, so lose that big fluffy indicator and give them a try.
I'll let some of the images from the last couple of days tell the tale.
If you haven't been to the Island Pool for a while you'll be in for a bit of a shock. I mentioned last time they'd be mulching down the willows that were sprayed during the summer ... and they have !
Tight lines guys
