Flood ! Sun 22nd September, 2013

The heavy rain that swept across the country during the night saw the Tongariro peak this morning at 650 cumecs.
The mini-flood we had last week shifted a bit of gravel and silt around but there will probably be a few changes along the river after this one.
Although this wasn't a huge flood there was still a bit of debris coming down, so when it drops back to fish-able levels expect some nice new snags to be waiting for you ... and I bet every one of them will be just where you don't want them to be!
I went for a look around after breakfast and Blue couldn't quite understand where his favorite track had gone. We only went downriver as far as the Bain car park because that was under two feet of water at nine o'clock.
I quite enjoy fishing the river after a flood ... lots to discover and re-learn ... so plenty of walking over the next week or two. That's going to make someone I know very happy!
At this time of year catches are a real mixed bag ... as you can see from the images taken just before the river came up. But after a good fresh as the levels fall back the fishing can be spectacular.
Unfortunately the window of opportunity for this week could be short-lived because they've forecast a deep subtropical low across the North Island late on Tuesday through to Thursday. This is expected to bring south easterly gales and more heavy rain ... but Turangi has its own weather system so we'll have to wait and see.
What ever happens once things return to normal I'm sure the locals will be out in force and already the sun is shining and levels are quickly dropping back ... keep an eye on the info page.
I'll sign off with a few more images taken this morning.
See you out there.
Tight lines guys
