Another week of top notch fishing on the Tongariro with the runs in full swing. If you haven’t fly fished before, now is a great time to give it a try. Mohammed Zabadi from Jordan did just that and the smile says it all.

On Sunday I had the best six hour session for over four years. During the morning I was joined by three other anglers on a weekend trip from Auckland and by then the tally was already past double figures … what a fantastic river.

I would have had some great shots for you but unfortunately I forgot to check my camera battery and it ran out. A big thank you to Richard Manthel for sending me the pic at the top of the page.

The fish kept coming into the early afternoon and on one occasion three of us hooked up simultaneously which prompted one of them to remark “you can’t get better than this.”

But I'm sure there's plenty more to come and it wouldn't surprise me if the Tongariro threw up a double figure rainbow or two this year.

Even so there are still a few anglers out there who are finding things a bit tough.

If others around you are catching and you're not, then there's a fair chance you're doing something wrong so don't be afraid to ask for advice. I know it can be intimidating when you're fishing amongst more experienced fly fishermen but most fisho's will be only too pleased to help out ... after all we were all in the same boat when we started.

If you are thinking of taking up fly fishing get on the river and have a go. The fishing is so good at the moment that even if your technique is a bit off, with a little bit of help you’ll probably hook up.

If you don't want a guide but have friends who fish, ask them if they’d mind if you went with them next trip. I'm sure they'll readily share their accumulated knowledge with you and may even help out with tackle. That way it won't cost you a fortune before you know if you even like it ... or not.

If none of your mates fish then why not join a club. There are heaps of them in New Zealand and fishing with others is one of the quickest ways to improve your knowledge base.

If you get the bug and decide to invest in your own gear buy the best equipment you can afford. Most reputable tackle shops will steer you in the right direction and if you also have an experienced mate to help you then so much the better. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to catch a trout but don't be tempted to buy cheap poor quality tackle because you'll only make life hard for yourself.

You may be better off looking at good second hand gear but seek advice from an old hand before you part with your money.

Fishing is a long fun journey ... take your time and enjoy the ride.
Remember the cute black and white ball of fluff we bought a few weeks ago ... well look at him now. We introduced him to the Tongariro this week and although he's still a bit young to take fishing he loves being on the river, which is just as well because he's going to spend a lot of his time there.
Some heavy rain forecast with rough weather expected tonight and tomorrow but you never know in Turangi. This will keep the fish coming and don't forget the recreational release on Saturday 14th from below the Poutu Intake. Its scheduled between 9am and 3pm so expect the town pools to start coloring up around 11.00 am. Have a great week.

Tight lines guys

Mike
