A busy few days on the river with lots of happy anglers. Everyone I spoke too had hooked up and if you stayed around town there were fish and fisho's everywhere. The town pools are always popular during the winter runs but its been a while since I've seen angler numbers anything like those on the weekend. The fishing was excellent here and some of the jacks especially were real rod benders that gave the gear a proper workout. Things were less hectic further upriver but I only went up as far as the Birch Pool. Too be honest I was a bit disappointed by then, only scoring one fish. So spent the rest of the trip fishing the "in between " spots below town ... well away from the road bridge.

On one occasion I shared a stretch with three other anglers and all of us ended up chasing fish downstream at some time or other.

If you haven't fished the Tongariro before don't under estimate these trout because they're in top condition and will soon expose any weakness in your tackle.

The river in this particular spot isn't that deep but there is a good flow and you need to get down fast. A weighted nymph off the bomb works well and I've been doing ok with red Copper Johns. But all mine were tied on medium wire hooks and on some of the fish they just weren't up to the job ... either bending out ... or worse.
Sunday saw more runs moving through and along with several others I spent the morning in the Braids and had a blast. Mark was fishing a a bit further upriver and when we met up at midday he had caught several nice rainbows and a brown. There's no doubt there is a continued improvement again this year and anglers who gave up on the Tongariro are starting to return ... personally I'm really looking forward to the next few months and I think we'll see some awesome fish caught.

Now a big thank you to all of you who emailed us about Jake. We've had dozens of emails from anglers and other dog owners expressing their sadness and I must admit I had watery eyes on a few occasions while reading them. But life goes on and although I was adamant that Jake was to be my last dog ... meet the new addition. He's arriving by air from Canterbury tomorrow afternoon so I've been " puppy proofing " the house all day. Not that it will make a blind bit of difference if previous pups are anything to go by. We've decided to call him " Blue " which will be the color of the air for most of the next six months !! ... I'll keep you posted.

Tight lines guys.

Mike
