Up-rooted tree across the track on the T.R.B. above Red Hut. It appears it was also a falling tree that struck the bridge damaging some of the cables and decking

The Red Hut bridge has been closed until further notice. The Advocates for the Tongariro posted this message last night ; " The severe wind storm experienced in Turangi on Monday night caused structural damage to the Red Hut bridge causing the Department of Conservation to close the bridge. DOC hope that it can be repaired quickly within a week but it may take a fortnight. The Tongariro River Trail Loop is not able to be completed as a result."
Trees have also been " downed " because of the high winds and anglers are being asked to report any that are affecting the access tracks to D.O.C on 07 386 8607. Don't forget this weeks scheduled recreational release from the Rangipo Dam on Sunday 13th January. This will affect the Tongariro between the Rangipo Dam and the Poutu Intake.
